where they live before got a reference

You should also ask them to fill out a credit application. You don't want to get stuck paying the entire rent while a roommate sits around and refuse to move out. You should ask about their job, years of employment and ask for proof of employment. You need to make a judgment on whether the person is financially responsible. Get reference for work history.

In a sense you should ask all the typical questions a landlord would ask. Get a credit check, and make them pay for it.

Have you ever been in charged with a criminal offense? Do you have a job? Do you like to party? Are you planning on operating a marijuana grow op in my home? Do you have any hot friends who can come over and vacuum in their gitch? These are just the basics.
