there are 2 types

die: it has threaded teeth on the inside of a hex nut like structure and cuts threads into the outside of a pipe. it is threaded on much like you would thread a nut on a bolt, but it has handles on the sides to get the proper torque

tap: its a round shaft with threaded teeth, much like a screw. it has a T handle on one end and it is threaded into the pipe to put threads on the inside.

the larger ones, meant for pipes in large buildings, are on stands and are motorized. below is a google image search for pipe threader. those are pipe threaders

A manual threader looks like a thick ring, big enough to go outside of the pipe that it is threading. There is a cutting edge inside and handles sticking out to give leverage. Basically you turn the threader on male end of the pipe and it cuts the thread into the pipe. It's not an easy task and the threader has to be kept straight.
You can buy a threader for various sizes of pipe, just do a search.

It cuts a groove in the pipe that matches other pipe fittings theaded parts- If you want to see one- Go to a Hardware Store, buy a piece of pipe and have them thread it- they do it all the time, and nothing like a good visual demonstration.

Pipe Threader, Ratchet
A handle that is usable with a variety of die sizes, with a ratchet that can turn a die, even when it cannot do a full turn. Used with a die, it cuts threads into pipe ends.

it is a die that cuts tapered threads on pipe after you cut it to length, if your this unsure of things you don't need to try it yourself, go to the library and read up on the process first, then attempt the repair... when you understand the process get the cutter and die set from harbor freight or a like store in your area, don't run gas pipe till your sure of yourself!
