A degree is awarded for four or more years of college study while a certificate is earned in two years or less. For example, you could earn a certificate as nursing assistant in less than two years to become an RN you would need at least four years of college.

There are different types of Degrees. You can get an associates degree from a community college in two years, A BA degree at a college or universtiy in four years, ect ect. For example, I have a degree in Sociology. Not only do I know sociology but I am well rounded in the college of Liberal Arts. To get a four year degree you will learn everything from Math,English,Science, culture, ect ect. When you get a two year associates degree its basically an extended highschool degree. If I went to a community college I would take Soc 100 and maybe five or six other 100 or 200 level sociology. I would also take the basic math, english, and other low level requirements. A BA, a four year degree at a university you will be required the low level, but also take higher level classes like Sociology 450 for example. The higher level the classes the more interesting it becomes, it doesn't always mean the hardest.
OK now that we got degrees out of the way a certificate is basically a job training course or courses. To be a medical assistant for example you will go to a school, often a community college where they offer this and you will take a series of classes that will help you hands on to learn the job. Usually this takes about 9 months for this course. Some certificate classes take longer. Its not just one class, its a series of classes that you will need for the job. If you are wanting to go to school and get a job within a year or so then a certificate is the best way to go. You can always go back to school later to further your education, but if you are looking ahead a few years you might want a degree. Anyway whatever way you go Good luck.

Degree's have a more rounded education, and certificates are more specialized.
When you enroll in a degree program you take math, english, literature, science, and other non-related courses while working toward you degree.
When you enroll in a certifiacte program every course you take (with the exception of the occational writing course) is directely related to what the certificate is for.
Degree's hold more value in most places, but a certificate can be viewed as just as good. Often times a certicicate will need renewal unlike a degree.

when you receive a degree, it usually means a 2 year associates degree, a 4 year university degree, or a masters, which means you specialize in any area of study and attending a university. a certificate is of lesser value. for example, you can have a certificate for dental assistance as opposed to a 4 year university degree to be a dental hygenist. hope this helps.

Well, I know I tend to want to look at things just a bit off the beaten path and from way outside the box, so I will give this one a try! I know for a fact that it has every bit to do with the lack of a right of passage into adulthood in our culture! The fact that Mom & Dad are too bussy making a living to provide proper guidance with many families also leads to what you have termed "Marriage Partners", as they usually get married to get out of the house. This true lack of Maturity has nothing to do with age, but with a lack of being taught a value system as can be found within most SPIRITUAL gathering places. Teens become Lovers by having sex, and not realizing that a marriage is intended to be a bond of friendship not just lust! Do you realize that Divorce has become the number one right of passage into Adulthood in the American Culture? Many think it is the drivers license or turning 21... I guess the easy way is to say that marriage partners have sex, while SPIRITUAL PARTNERS have SEX. What passes for an intimate relationship with marriage partners isn't even good foreplay when compaired to that of SPIRITUAL Partners! ME! .

In general a certificate is ranked lower and given for a basic or limited course of study. A degree is ranked higher and is given for a higher/fuller course of study, as in College degree.
It generally qualifies a person to teach/work at a professional level.

Degree is an advancement over a certificate. Think about a degreed brain surgeon, and a certified medical technician. Then think: which one should operated on a patient. Degrees are highly specialized. On paper: Certification- you can do it, Degree- you can do it well. More training is invovled for a degree.
