I graduate high school in 95 and never had a chemistry class. I love Biology but math by far is my worst subject. I have approx. 3 sem. left then I can transfer to a 4 yr. univ. for PreMed.
My advisor signed me up for Chemistry 111 (which he also is the instructor) I told him all the above when I signed up. Well, our first class was yesterday and 10 min. into it he plops down a 4 page fill in the blank test which does count as a grade. Well Of course...I am feeling soooo stupid. I found out there is a pre chemistry class but does not count as a credit for transfer , its just I guess for preperation.
Should I drop this chem class and sign up for the other one that will set me back a semester....or
should I push and try to crash course myself? Is there any online stuff...I checked out www.chem4kids.com , would that kind of sight give me enough info to keep on...I have till Monday morning to decide!!!! Help ...please!

Stay in your current class. My first day in chem, the instructor did the same thing (hand out a take home test) and it was just to see what you know. Oh, not to mention, I graduated HS in 94 and this chemistry class was just 2 years ago, so it had been a few years since I'd been at the books. Anyway, tough it out and see how it goes. If you aren't doing well by midterm, then drop it. But, I'm willing to bet that you'll be fine. Good luck!

that is tough. i am also bad at math and took environmental sci in high school. of course i am a history major so i don' t need chem. if u have a lot on your plate this semester than i would push it back and take the prep class. when i started college i was given an exam which told me that i could go straight into the standard level math, but i knew my skills were not that good so i audited the lower class. it put me a lil behind but it also made me more confident and i did much better in the upper level classes because i had the basics down pat. P.s. I have a 3.5 gpa, i may be taking it slow but i know when i am done i will actually have learned something not just crammed for a grade.

It doesn't sound like the pre chemistry is a prerequisite for taking your current class. But, just so you are aware of this, the MCAT has chemistry questions as well and you want to have a good understanding of this subject. What is the name of Chemistry 111? If it really is difficult, it doesn't hurt you to take one extra class even if the credit doesn't transfer. Medical school is very competitive, you don't want to get too many bad grades.

Hello, Michelle.

It seems to me you dread Chemistry. May I know what is it in Chemistry that you want to avoid which makes you avoid enrolling in a much-needed Pre-Med course.

Honey, you will need Chemistry to understand all the biological and physiological ongoings in the human body. And I am sure, no practicing physician or medical expert would contradict me on this. Even herbalists would say they touched the course.

So, much as you dread it, you must take it. Chemistry is not pure mathematics, anyways. It's about reactions; the mathematics part is just there to keep things organized because Chemistry is an exact science and there is very little room for errors. Anyways, I trust that you will find lots of help as you take your class (that includes me). : )

I am just starting back to school again for my RN degree. I myself am taking the Chemistry 101 since I took no chemistry in high school. You could always try to tough it out and play catch up, but why put yourself through all of the additional stress? Having to take 1 additional class is not the end of the world and would probably be beneficial to you. In the end you have to do whatever is most comfortable to you. Good luck.

Can you do a summer class so that you do not lose a whole semester?
If you think you will fail then drop it. If you can get a B or a C with tutoring then stick with it.
If you wait until mid term to see if you are passing then you will definitely lose a semester because you will not be able to take the intro class right now.
Tough decision. Take those things into consideration and you should be able to make the best decision for yourself.

i am a college student myself and has asked myself this same question about math, but i realized that i need the class and want to get it over with, we have tough moments in life but have to push through especially when there is no way around it. keep the class and do ur best. you have made it this far, and what would your 4 yr college think, advisors are there for a reason, to advise, and i am going through the same but we have to work it out.

If you feel you are not prepared, take the prep course. Your GPA is more important than how long it takes you to finish. Finishing faster with a crappier mark is only going to harm you in the long run.
