Try getting an air filter/purifier. When you use coffee beans, or any other type of "good" smelling thing, you might end up mixing that with the smell of what's inside.
An air filter is not large, but it will make the whole house smell fresh without the fragrance of coffee or cedar.
I also use carpet powder that you pour into your carpet and then vacuum it up. It smells great.
The best bet would be to get an air filter, and then once the house smells fresh, add your own spice to it. It cleans the air in your household, making it safer for you.
Just keep it on high for the first few days you have it, and then once your house smells better, keep it on low to maintain the freshness.

I sometimes use a dryer sheet(Bounce or Downy) and put them on fans or a/c ducts to make the house smell fresh. In the winter time I use an old tin can like from vegetables and put some Pine-Sol mopping solution and water in it and put it on the egister ducts where the heat comes out of.

Natural cedar is very fresh smelling.
I use natural beeswax candles once in a while.
Artificial scents usually don't set well with me, so I avoid them as much as possible.
Some of the aromatherapy burners for essential oils look interestinng, but I haven't purchased one yet.

The Spring and Fall are great times to air out your home. Open all the doors and windows and just let the air filter through your home. I also recommend using a simmer pot to give your home a lovely scent. If you do not have a simmer pot, put a large pot of water on the stove and add some potpourri to the pot, and set the stove on low. You'll notice a lovely aroma wafting through.

Mine always has the same smell when I come back from long vacations (as I get used to not smelling it then). It smells like strong chicken broth to me.

I like to use a pot of water on the stove with a little vanilla extract in it and just let it simmer. Also I will cut an apple in half sprinkle a little cinnamon on it and put in the oven on warm. With kids in the house I don't like to use the chemicals and candles are just an accident waiting to happen.

I don't personally like Febreeze. It doesn't last long. You have to keep spraying. I have found the double plug-ins great. It rotates back and forth, and lasts. I also burn my own candles, which are double wicked and they have so many to choose from. I love a good candle. Yet, nothing beats fresh air.
