The question came out of the blue. He is deployed in Iraq, so having children should be the last thing on his mind, you would think. This question came after a confession from him about how he felt about me. The usual stuff, you're pretty, smart, etc. Anyway,do men usually ask this question just to see what a woman would say or is the "child" question a serious question about our future together?

men, as well as women, will say many false things but will never talk about children unless they are coming from the heart.

Sounds to me like he is thinking of a future together with you, and he just wants to make sure the two of you are on the same page.

Any man that brings up the topic of children is looking to the future (one with you in it). If he were with you just for the short-term he wouldn't give a damn about your long-term goals.
