random question:

Does AMD Athlon (not 64, just regular) really perform THAT much better than AMD Sempron?

Same for Intel Pentium 4 vs. Pentium Celeron.

my desktop has Sempron and my laptop has Celeron. both seem to work just as well, if not smoother, than my friend's P4 and my other friend's Athlon.

i was just wondering, because sometimes it can make a great price difference when buying. =)

for everyday tasks (web, email, playing music, editing pics, etc.) and even gaming, i haven't noticed a difference. that was my comparison basis. =)

Yes and no. No there is no visual differences in the performance between the two if you are an office user, or a low power computer user. If however, you are a gamer (yes games are being played on Laptops today)and you want to play games on your computer then yes there is a big difference. Both the Athlon and Pentium 4 have more, what is know as, on board memory and in most cases the premium processors have more in total transistors. This allows for a faster transition between your system RAM and hard drive, etc. which finely equals smoother game play. If you are comparing the three because you are only accessing the net or using Office then you will not see any real difference. On the other hand, If either of your friends have one of the newest system draining games such Doom 3, FEAR, Quake 4, etc. ask them to let you try one of those games on your laptop and or home computer and then you will see the difference and understand.

Note: AMD no longer makes the premium AthlonXP 32 bit processor as they now have only the 64 bit Athlon's.

Depends on what you are doing for standard web browsing a celeron and sempron perform reasonably well, same holds true for Microsoft apps. Where performance decreases is on any high processor useage applications as well as 3D gaming. I personally would never buy a processor less than and Athlon 64 or Pentium IV Dual Core. What works ok today will not work the same in a year.

It depends on what you need to do with it. If you only use a computer for web surfing and word processing and such, then yeah, you'll notice absolutely no difference in the performance.

It's only in the more processor-intensive tasks that you'll notice a real difference. Developing software, or playing modern video games would more likely show a real difference between the two.

I've never used a Sempron before, but i can tell you that there is, in fact, a difference between P4 and Celeron. The celerons definitely have lesser performance; but again, you'll only notice it when you're doing processor-intensive tasks.

I don't know about AMD, but I ever have compared Intel Processor with different applications, and yes, it's different performance. I use Celeron M 1.6 GHz Processor for my laptop and Intel Pentium III - 1GHz for my desktop PC, it has same 512 MB ram, and same applications, and I feel almost the same performance.
In my opinion, the chipsets used in your motherboard are the main factor which set what pc you like to built, for game, graphic design, database processing and so on.
I found that processor internal cache are significant factor for graphics processing such as adobe photoshop, but less significant factor for games applications.

How about your opinion?
