It all depends upon the language of the trust documents or charter of the church. Most such documents allow a trustee to resign. Appointment of a replacement is done as directed in the documents. Often they provide that the remaining trustees can appoint a third. In some small rural southern churches there no documents at all --- just years of tradition. In such cases the members or their designated representatives should see an attorney about formally incorporating the church or at least forming a corporation or trust to hold the church property.

You would have to modify the document that acts as the basis of the church -- operating agreement perhaps? Maybe there is a trust committee that must meet and "vote" you in? It depends on how the church is set up and what kind of legal entity it is.
