It's so irritating. Are most people really that dumb or are they just lazy?

That would be "grammar Nazi".

When I first read your question I thought the same thing as Drshorty. If you can understand what the person is trying to get across, then all right. Really irritating though, is when the words are so abbreviated that you can't understand what the person is trying to say.
I agree with those who have said too that it's the IN thing, to type lol, rofl, brb, etc. It's been called the "language of the internet". And not just abbreviations, some of these people just can't spell. Maybe it's the laziness that keeps them one click away from spell check. It irritates me too, but hey, doesn't it give you an ego boost? Hehe ;D

In my opinion, if you are able to understand the question, the grammar is okay.

Many of the grammar rules that people go by today were created in the 1700s by people such as Robert Lowth and Noah Webster. Unfortunately, the grammar "rules" are basically arbitrary rules that were invented to give some people higher status. These rules often discredit the way that English had been used for hundreds of years before they were made. For example, split infinitives, dangling participles and double negatives are all grammar features that existed in English long before the rules that prohibit them were created. Therefore, when people use "bad grammar", they're often just doing things that English speakers have been doing for hundreds and hundreds of years.

I don't really think it's right to judge people for the way they use language. To say that some people have the right to use language because they know "rules" and others don't because they don't know rules is overly restrictive. It disrespects the incredible savvy that everyday people have with the way they use language, and it attempts to make some people of higher status than others.

If you want to learn more about this, do a search on "history of prescriptivism".

Mainly people are just that lazy. This is the day of the Internet; when everything is shorten down so you can get a lot in a conversation. Personally, it annoys the crap out of me. I'm sure some of our children's teachers are seeing papers turned in like. U R 2 good 2 be true, or something like that. I know I don't have the best grammar, but there are a lot who are worse off than I am. It's pretty sad, actually.

I agree. I get so frustrated when reading questions that doesn't use good grammar. I think people are just too lazy to put the correct punctuation and use the correct spelling. I mean, how long can that take right?

They think the failure to use proper punctuation, capitals, grammar, and spelling when they chat online is okay. They've extended this stupidity to other realms. Eventually, they will be unable to use adequate written language skills at all. This cutesiness has already begun to appear on various products such a canned and boxed dry goods labels at grocery stores. It appears as though idiocy is contagious.

The short answer:
It is a combination of lackadaisical attitude and artificial stupidity, which to me is worse than authentic stupidity.

That is funny. I don't have proper grammar but I try to spell correctly. I've seen questions that I could not even read due to spelling and abbreviation's. If I answer a question and you find a error please correct me I'm just not that educated, sorry.

Because nowadays "Grammer School" is not what it was originally named for. I had to learn what an adjective and an adverb were from my college Japanese teacher because I was not taught the meaning (or usage) in any class in my previous 12 years of schooling.

Most people like to finish their typing quickly and don't really care about any gramatical and spelling errors they may make.
