Unfortunately, your car is OBD II, and that means that the "check engine" light can be anything from a loose gas cap to a failed crankshaft position sensor or transmission speed sensor. OBD II cars have dozens of little sensors that are all hooked to a computer, and there are a thousand ways that the little devils can fail or cause you a headache.

I'd check the easy ones like tightening the gas cap, making sure ALL of your vacuum lines under the hood are connected properly, and replacing your O2 sensor if it's due. If that doesn't make the light go away, go to a trusted mechanic. They can tell you immediately what the trouble code is that tripped the check engine light; it will be stored in your car's computer.

Usually the Check engine lite has to do with smog, 02 sensor or sometimes the vacuum lines for the smog

While you don't need to rush out and replace it tomorrow, it will affect your performance and mileage.
