i thought that was funny but some of the answers are too. thats just the english language. thats how its been since our speech was created. someone looked at an animal and said hey you animal youre going to be a chicken...so on and so forth. thats like asking why we call s.h.i.t. s.h.i.t. it is what it is baby love it or leave it but you can always start your own trend as long as you have confidence in what you do people will always follow

Some use why to keep the conversation open, others use it to brow beat the person they are communicating with.

if you don't wanna say "why". just say "huh" instead..
but the difference is, if you say "huh", it's like you're not paying attention but "why" is more common and it has a ring to it too.
