If it was made for sale in the US after 1980, the VIN must use the tenth character to show the year. It starts as a code with a as 980, b as 1981, c as 1982, etc., skipping the characters not used in VINS (i,q). In 2001, they went to the year being the last digit of the year. I don't know what will happen in 2009/10.

It should say on the VIN plate...look on the steering neck
