What the heck is up with people leaving their babies/children in cars and forgetting that they are there? How do you forget that your child is in the car? There was ANOTHER story on the news tonight about a ten month old child left and forgotten in the fathers vehicle and he went to work, got off work and found his child dead from the heat.

I just do not see how someone forgets that they have their child in the car with them...I mean babies make noise most of the time. If they are asleep that is still no excuse. You had to wake that child up that morning, feed that child, dress that child, pack a diaper bag for that child, take that child and strap him/her in a car seat and all the other things you do to get a child ready and in a car to go some place sooooooooo how do you forget your child is in the damn car?

I live in Texas and this has been like the 4th child's death in this manner that I have heard in the last few months.
Our temperatures right now are in the 100's and up to 108 so far.

I have a six year old and would never dream of leaving her in the car alone for any reason. I don't care if I am running into the convienence (sp) store and can see her from the window. That is just totally irresponsible.

There is an answer . There is no possible way a parent could forget about a child. A child is the first thing you wake up to. A child is someone you think about often when your away at work or shopping. A person checks on a child before they go to bed. Even sometimes a person wakes during sleep because of a noise they may have heard. Your answer to your question is. YOU CANT' FORGET!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH!! I am so with you on this! I have made it a personal thing with me--if i see a child in a car seat left alone, even if its obvious they have just stepped into Starbucks for a coffee and the baby is sleeping...(seen this twice) I stand there outside the car--dramatically take down the license number and if they still haven't shown up-- I start dialing my phone and that gets them outside quick. When the mom shows up- I remind them that this was child abandonment and endangerment--and its A CRIME. Of course it pisses them off--but I've done it enough-I don't really care--I figure they will probably NOT do it again, just in case another nosy ***** like me shows up! But if it saves any child--I'll take the risk and be a pain.
One time, this one Mom tried to appeal to me as a Mom by saying " Well, you know how it is--the baby was sleeping....it was just a minute...you've done it haven't you?" And I could honestly could say--"I've had 3 babies and, no, I NEVER left them in car, not even for a minute" There is no excuse for forgeting your baby!!

I have a friend who had a similar incident happen, but it was not intentional nor did she leave her child in the car and go in somewhere. She was only 18 at the time, but very mature and responsible. It was two summers ago and she parked at a pizza place, got out of her car, shut the door, and walked to the passenger side to get her daughter (a 10 month old) out of the backseat. When she got to the passenger side, the door was locked. She immediately yelled at someone going into the diner to call the police to help her. It took 20 minutes for an officer to show up in our tiny, tiny town. He looked into the car, looked at her, and then he looked at the crowd of people that had been waiting there to see if the baby was okay. He then stepped away from the car and began yelling at my friend for being such a bad parent and telling her what she should have done. All the while, the baby is in the car in sweltering heat. She was crying and turning red. She and onlookers kept urging the officer to unlock the car. He said, "I didn't lock it." Finally, one of the men nearby got a golf club out of his car and told the officer if he did not unlock it he was going to break out a window. The officer had the nerve to simply turn around and get into his car. The man busted out a window and got the baby out. She was limp and so hot. My friend considers that man her daughters angel. He even paid to fix her window! The police officer was not reprimanded for what he did, but there were many write ups in the local paper about him!

I actually observe people doing this most of the time. Today for instance at the gas station. I saw the lady pumping her gas, and then looked in on her infant sitting in the car seat. Looked around and bolted for the entrance. I cleared my throat and pointed to her car. She told me to mind my own business I said when you endanger your child it is my business. Last winter at a department store, I noticed that there was an infant in the backseat not in a carseat??????? car not running. And parents nowhere to be found. I went into the department store and had the employee page over the system " Baby left in 1995 Toyota Celica" my friend was outside at the car while I was in. Waited 2 seconds and called the cops. The parents were in the bar next door. Pisses me off too.

I agree 100%. There is no excuse imaginable in the human mind that would be a legitimate excuse for leaving a baby in a vehicle.

The child is dead. The person responsible for the death of the child should be charged with no less than 2nd degree murder. Maybe 3rd degree, but definitely murder.

I have no pity whatsoever for parents whose child has died because of the parents' neglect, stupidity or forgetfulness.

they do not forget their children that is just an excuse for being a bad mother who is eager to go shopping without the added encumbrance of a wailing baby! I will just say that if you are so keen on shopping then they should not thought of ever being a parent and if you are a parent to a child then the child is not there as a showpiece for other people to watch and gurgle about, a parent should be responsible or should not be a parent at all!It is not just heat that kills, what about car jackings and kidnappings?

Even when we know it will "only be a minute" everyone gets out of the car. We have 3 kids from 21 months to 8 years old. It is a pain in the tush, but I would rather have my 3 pains in the tush than the pain of not having them.

21 month old can't fend for themself, and with an 8 year old could happen!

:)
You go, Girl!

In my opinion, people that forget they have children in the car have no right to be parents. They should be held accoutable and charged with murder. I don't feel sorry for the parents, I feel sorry for the innocent children, having to have stupid parents like that. I could never understand how anyone could forget their children, whether they are used to having the children with them or not.

Some people are either self-centered or absent -minded and just plain careless . I don't believe in giving people a second chance to mess up a child forever . And you have to have a license to fish..

When I see children left in cars (at the mall etc.) I notify staff and they bring out security . They also reprimand the parent. Even if it's not hot out, the child could be abducted.
