your position depends on how tall you are and where you are skilled at. ask a friend to see what position best fits you. then develop that skills needed for that position.
center-you basically need to be tall and try to play defense like shotblocking and rebounding the ball. on offense, you must learn how to post up and learn baby hooks and stuff. think hakeem olajuwon.
power forward-basically a smaller center but more athlethic. think kevin garnett or amare stoudemire.
small forward-more of a tall shooting guard. must be a good shooter! must also be good at driving. rashard lewis is a good example.
shooting guard-drives and jumpers are his game. kobe bryant is great (without the ball-hogging)
point guard-must be quick and have court vision. must learn how to locate an open teammate. must never be selfish with the ball. even though he doesn't need to score that much, a good point guard s never selfish with the ball. jason kidd is my guy here.

Five basic positions -- shooting guard, point guard, small forward, power forward center. The guards are the shortest, the forwards in the middle, the center is tallest.
Your position probably will be determined on how tall you are in relation to your team. If you are just starting, you probably won't be the point guard, since he controls the basketball more than any other player.
No matter where you play, though, you need to work hard on basic skills -- shooting, passing, defense, etc. Plus, keep hustling on both ends of the court.
Good luck.

Be a 1 (point guard). If you're speedy and you have a just right jumpshot, then which you can be a hazard to drive in for a layup, or false a power and pull up for a shot. Additionally, a four or 5 may not be suitable as others are taller than you.

there r five positions. Other than shooting and handling comes athleticism. The 3 spot [small forward] is usually the most athletic. and hardest to defend because of size. Of course defense but i wouldnt worry cause your in middle school. i myself am in high school averaging ova 30 points a game. and not only two years ago i was asking the same question. But if your athletic and somewaht tall i would go for small forward.
