If this is like other schools, then the teachers are probably going to be digging in to their own pockets all year to make up for a short-fall in funding. They will be paying for extra paper, pencils, art supplies, etc. Helping them lay in a supply of those things they will be contributing is always welcome. Judging from the quality of your writing, though, I get the feeling that your school is not the ordinary public school and may have adequate funding. If so, then you still have time to purchase some nice paper and envelopes, inexpensively, and make some personalized stationary on your computer for them. Twenty to thirty page ones plus twenty to thirty blank page twos plus twenty to thirty matching envelopes for each teacher shows you put some thought and work in to the gift. These gifts mean something more than a store-bought gift. HP.com has stationary builders, as do most digital photo programs.

It seems more logical to give gifts in June or whenever the school year ends instead of at the beginning. You would think that a gift is a token of appreciation for a good year of teaching. Thats why people don't tip before the meal. Sometimes tradition is difficult to argue with though.

The best thing you can give your teacher is a reason to be proud of you. Show them their efforts to "school" you have been productive.

They will appreciate seeing you leave next summer a lot smarter than when you arrived in September.

Most teachers love apples.... Not just the fruit! Go for figurines to put on their desk, pins, notepads, lightswitch plate covers, you could think of a million things that have apples on 'em! You could also go to the dollar stores! They have recently come out with 'teacher central' with supplies, stamps, stickers, etc!

well, since it's 4 september, maybe gift cards. then they can buy whatever they want, since u don't really know what they like yet. or something they need 4 the classroom. or flowers 4 the ladies and candies 4 the men.

Teachers always love a good pen. They have to write constantly so a comfortable always does the trick. You can get small giftbags pretty cheap and use tissue paper and ribbon to decorate.

Make a card and write something special about the teacher. You can also make some snack food yourself and wrap it nicely.

If you really want to go all out go with the Tiffanys apple. They are gorgeous! All my teachers love them.

gift certificates/american express checks
Good quality candles

And not to a book store. Teachers don't spend all of their money on books!
