To a person who ponders on Mathematics, the most difficult part of it is `Basics of Mathematics'.That`s why your lecturer has asked you this question.
Take for example, a person has worked from 10 th of August to 20 th of the same month. How many days does the person has worked for ?. Mathematically it is very simple, ie. person has worked for 20-10=10 days. But, practically it is not so easy and true. That is the answer 10 days is wrong. Actually he has worked for 11 days. Hence the true difference is [(20 + 1)-10]= 11 days.
The simple and apparent difference between 10 and 20 is + or - 10. But , the practical difference is + or - 11.
By the above concept we may say that there is 9 digits difference between 0 and 8.And by simple Mathematics it is + or -8 of difference.
Also, when a man walks from 0 mile to 8 th mile it is true that he has walked for 8 miles here the Mathematical difference is true.
ie. 8-0=8
Moreover, 8 is made out of two zeros placing one over the another. When the same is placed horizontally it indicates infinity. But , 0 placed in any other way it will be a congruent figure.
8 implies a quantity, where as 0 dose not indicate any quantity in Absolute Mathematics.

Eight is a number. Zero is a placeholder if there's no number; so it represents nothing, you might say. So if you have eight jelly beans and don't take any of them away, You'd still have eight jelly beans.
I think your lecturer might be asking you to distinguish between the number Eight, and the placeholder Zero.
Let's look at this a little differently. Here is the number set:
0 ----- 10
1 ----- 11
2 ----- etc
3 -----
4 -----
5 -----
6 -----
7 -----
8 -----
9 -----
When you want to add 1 more to nine, you go back to the top and place a 1 in the tens column in front of the zero in the ones column. The zero itself has no value, it's the 1 in the tens column that makes it a ten. The zero just clarifies what column the one is in.

Really you shouldn't be asking this if you are doing mathematics at a higher level.
There are many differences between 8 and 0.
0 is not a number, 8 is.
8 is a multiple of 2, 0 is not.
8 is a multiple of 4, 0 is not.
You can divide by 8 and get a real number, not by 0.
When you have 8, you have something; when you have 0 you have nothing.
0 is from the original arabic counting sytem, 8 is not.
y multiplied by 8 is different to z multiplied by 8; y multiplied by 0 is the same as z multiplied by 0.
The "difference" mathematically speaking is 8.
Please be a little more specific, the exact wording of the question makes a big difference, especially if this is a semantic riddle.

Well i don't understand why anyone would want to know this if the other answers on here are anything to go by. I'll tell you my way...I put 8 tictacs in a row and if the space before the first one is zero and the last one in the row is eight then the difference between zero and eight is seven.........or fourteen cals if you are weight watching...tada. Should I go to the back of the class?.

Firstly zero is a cube as 0*0*0=0 but this is beside what you asked.
Second are you talking inclusively or exclusively as others have mentioned.
Well to go to degree fun- Topology.
Zero is to eight:
Half, number of enclosed spaces.
Equal, verticies.
Equal, continuos smooth lines (no verticies).
One less, intersections.

the difference is 8 its a trick question to see how you think. as if there is 0 the how do you get to 8 by adding 8 so therefor the difference is 8.

The word "difference" is just mathspeak for "Subtract". So basically it's saying "Subtract A from B. What do you get?"
In this case, it's 8. The difference between any number and 0 is ... no difference.
