Tom, only the very ignorant pronouce "roof" as ruff, like a dog. Perhaps they need to be sent to obedience school.

There's no such thing as Canadians. Canadians from the Maritimes have a different accent from Western Canadians or from Canadians from Quebec, just to mention a few examples.
Come to think of it, it's pretty much what happens in USA with people from let's say Texas, NY or California, same difference...

No, I'm American, but I must say there is nothing wrong with Canadian pronunciation. It's just another way to pronounce the same word. For example, there are myriad of dialects in just the US. Here in the South, we tend to mumble our words and, as everyone seems to know, speak with a drawl. We'd say "d' rouf" here, in Georgia, instead of "the roof".
Also, the British tend to mock the American pronunciations of words, as well as spellings. So, I find it funny that Americans mock the Canadians. I think we all need to respect one another's differences, not try to muscle in what "we" think is "right", and what "they" think is "wrong".

Nope, I picked up this pronunciation when I lived in Canada and I think it's just fine.
The way we feel about the way people use language is a reflection of how we feel about the people. So I'm guessing you don't like Canadians.

If people say it aboot, then they aren't saying the dipthong. "Oww"-noise.
Personally, I'm Canadian, and I say it "properly".
But hey! I met this guy from Wisconsin once and he had the worst UP accent I had ever heard.
Callage= College, Hackey=hockey.
And he said those words A LOT.

Sorry.....I pronounce it just the same way you do. I don't know about this "moose aboot the hoose" except in sketch comedies about Scottish Canadian immigrants.
Now, what makes my skin crawl is "yous guys"

We here have a world community. Amalgamation of all communities! So, we don't bother who speaks how! Everything makes sense in US!

I guess I need to find more things to do....
Now, when you hear southerners call twisting your ankle "crilling" your ankle, or Elvis is EVLis or elbow is EBLow... that's irritating...

nothing is wrong with the way we pronounce about. whats wrong is the american ruf. what the hell is that? its roof, with two O's. Eh, not ehh, is better than HUH! anyways.
