What is right, and what is left. How does one know which one they are? For as long as people have been using these terms, I still have yet to figure this one out. any light you can shed will be great. Thanks.

Those on the Left are considered to have Liberal views. Those on the Right are viewed as Conservative. There are those to the extrema on either side, most like to think of themselves as being somewhere in the middle whether they are Liberal or Conservative.
Conservatives are often viewed as being more Family orientated and religious, sometimes to the exstreme.
Liberals are said to be more open to change and more humane to some degree.
Democrat es are usually Liberal while Republicans are thought to be Conservative.
The problem is that both sides have changed positions back and fourth so many times since the conception of either party that it is hard to tell the two apart.
Me, I'm Libertarian for the most part. You can use the WEB to find out more info on Liberals, Conservative, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or a half dozen other parties and political beliefs all clamoring for your attention.
The question you need to ask yourself is how do you want the government to interact with you? Or you with it. Most people who believe that government is the answer to their problems lean heavily to the Left. Those that believe that government should be as unobtrusive in their lives as possible tend to lean to the Right.
Sorry, that's the best I can do on the spur of the moment.

The term "right wing" originally comes from legislative seating during the French Revolution and monarchists sat on the right of the chamber and called themselves "rightists." The "right wing" emphasizes free market economy and capitalism, traditional and moral values. Strangely, the Chinese communists call themselves "right" while the western definition of communism falls distinctly left. Fascism is also generally accepted as "right."

"Left wing" is usually associated with strains of socialism and liberalism. As with the right, the revolutionaries sat on the left side of the assembly during the French Revolution. Which explains why liberals are often seen as revolutionaries. The "left" is often secular. They often are also seen as putting the people before the whole.

It is quite confusing, I agree. I also wish it would stop being defined as right and left and then the conservatives could quit declaring themselves to be the "right" in all sense of the term.

I hope I could help and didn't confuse you more than you already were!

right is conservative and left is liberal. I would like to comment that this type of thinking for a political spectrum is very good because Stalin and Gandhi are both considered Left. Heres a better option the Political Compass. This includes your economic and civil liberty beliefs.
