The obvious mathematical answer would be .99 cents as the eggs are 1 cent apiece. But,the farmer would probably not want to break up a dozen to give you the extra 3 eggs, especially at such a low price. So,he would probably sell you either 8 dozen, which would be .96 cents, or 9 dozen @ $1.08.So you see, in the real world, either of the three answers could be correct.

As long as you know that there are 12 in a dozen (and 13 in a baker's dozen) you should have no trouble figuring out that the eggs are 1¢ each and 99* eggs would be 99¢!

*(99 is 8 1/4 dozen or 8 dozen and 3)

This is actually a lot more complex than the vast majority of you might realize. The price per unit is generally not a linear function of the quantity sold. Rather, the entire concept of unit pricing is known in microeconomic terms as "bundling," but is more accurately known as 2nd-degree price discrimination.

Getting back to the question, think about this rationally: would you really buy 99 eggs at any price? Unless you really, really like eggs, it's unlikely you'd be able to consume them all before they spoil. You'd be willing to pay less for each additional unit, a phenomenon known as diminishing marginal utility. Thus, the price you'd be willing to pay for such a large amount of eggs would be only slightly higher than what you'd be willing to pay for a much smaller amount.
