I am a registered dem. and I do vote outside the party lines. I registered dem. because I had to put something in the box. There have been elections I have voted all Republicans and some have been a mix. I vote with what I think will work for me, and sometimes I don't like what the democrat party candidate has to say. People tell me that voting both sides of the ballot messes things up in DC and the state governments because I, and voters like me, didn't vote the party ticket. Should I be an independent?

First, you need to vote how YOU feel on an issue or a politician. No, you don't mess up DC. The politicians have done a good job of it themselves.
Don't go Indep as you will not be able to vote in ANY of the primaries, unless there are several Indep running. But that happens almost never.
I think that is how most people vote. I am registered Repub. But, I have voted for Dems if I thought they would be the better person.

If there were more voters like you our country wouldn't be in such a mess. You think! Voting a straight party line is lazy and dangerous.

The problem I've seen with registering Independent is that sometimes the main parties send their literature to only one or the other and you miss out. I've been a registered Democrat for years. My husband registers as a Republican. It's interesting to see how we're approached differently at election time.

No, I am a Republican but I still look at candidates & vote for the best canidate. It does not mess up anything unless you do not educate yourself before you vote. DC does not care how you are registered, if everyone voted straight party why vote at all - we could look at how everyone registered & declare the winner. No voting needed - that does not work. Tell everyone to get a life.

That depends on what state you live in, and whether or not you vote in primary elections. Here in Pennsylvania, you can only pick your own party's candidate in the primary, and if you're an independent, you can't vote in the primary. But if you're in a state that allows crossover voting or you don't care about the primaries (though you should), then it doesn't really matter what party you are.

In my state, if you are an Independent you cannot vote in primaries. The primaries are very important because they often decide who the winner will be. There is nothing wrong with voting outside of your party lines. It shows that you are a thinking voter who is selective. Don't change your registration.

Be whatever you want to be-that would be exersising your right to vote for who and what you agree with. Voting strictly on party lines is a job for sheep. It is perfectly acceptable to register dem and vote rep or vice versa. Your right, your vote. Believe me, DC is hosed up all on it's own, not because somebody like you had the integrity to vote for what you thought was right.

How can you possibly mess up ANYTHING in Washington,DC that isn't already beyond repair? Look, registering with a party just gives the FBI a record of your affiliation in case of national emergengies...you know so they will know who to round up if there ie a problem...just kidding. Vote your conscious...pick the person you feel will be the best for you. Screw everyone else...they can't complain unless they vote.

You should vote in local elections if it matters... You should voe for Democrats agains tRepublicans in the Presidentil election if you are ina swing state always (holding your nose).
But overall, nothing that has been done for the People has been done because of voting. It has been done by popular struggle and hard work on the issues - women's vote, blacks vote, civil rights, anti-war activism, New Deal, on and on... all forcing the politicians to arise and forcing the system to adjust politically. You should work on that every day. You need an independant mind to do so though, and that requires educating yourself about the nature of party politics. Read Francis Fox Piven's new book Challenging Authority: How Ordinary People Change America.

That is the best way to really be Independant but at the same time organize with People instead of with corporate electoral puppets.

To be quite honest, our votes no longer count or matter. It also doesn't matter any b/c all the politicians are saying the same thing. The president doesn't pull the strings , his advisors do. not to mention all the presidents are and have been members of secret societies. Most commonly the Skulls and Bones who by the way are the ones who decides who they are going to put up for the running and even match them up so it looks like your votes count but in actuality it is like the WWF just good entertainment

It does not mess anything up anywhere. It is voters who are non-partisan, who can look at each candidate and then pick the best one that we need more of. Voting a party ticket defeats the purpose of democracy. You need to just vote you conscience
