Whats it like? How is the cost of living? What to do during down time? How are the stores? I might be going there to work on one of the bases there and am curious as to what I could expect? Is it really day and night six month each? How is the weather? Any and all info is much appreciated. thanks

Hi Pardner,,,,, I dont live there, but I work up there,,,, for the last 5 years.... so,,, here is the scoop..... its beautiful.... its a wilderness,,, and yes there are bears and moose that wander around.. Things are more expensive because most everything has to be shipped up .... Housing is about the same as the lower 48 or so.. The weather.. its Warm in the Summer,, the mosquitoes and no-see-ums will bite you and wrap you up,,,,no kidding... The Winter is darn Cold,, its Alaska,,, what do you expect??? Palm Beach......lol .... lots to do outdoors,, hike , ski ,, camp,, fish,, hunt... there are clubs in Anchorage to party ,,, and good resturants,,,,, they do Not use much flavorings in the food.....(that is my biggest gripe) so bring some... if you like it spicy.... In the Spring and Summer the 24 hours of light and it is pitch dark in Nov thru Feb ..... every one leaves the Christmas lights up ,, to keep the Blues away,,, and lower the suicide rates....no kidding...
Do not,, play with the bears,, they are not pets or the moose.. the bears will eat you and an angry Momma Moose will stomp you if you get around her little ones......

Hope it helps,,,
good luck

What the last guy said, sums it up pretty well. I just have to make one correction (living in Alaska all my life). There is not total darkness all winter unless you are in the Arctic. If you are in the southern half of the state, there is always some sunlight, just a few hours in the middle of winter though. Anchorage, or anything else on that latitude gets about 5 hours of light in the middle of winter. Of course the farther north you go, the less light you get in winter, and the less darkness you get in summer. It does stay light all summer though, even in Anchorage. The sun sets, but it is just barely below the horizon, so there is still light all night!
