Nitrous Oxide. And it IS the same compound as used in dentestry. The gas controls cumbustion by cooling the cylinder between cycles. The gas in itself is not explosive at all. It is not illegal to have in a car but it is illegal to use it on the public streets. And correctly stated, it will destroy an engine if sprayed while the motor is in neutral or not at WOT. That is why it is always recommended to install a deadman switch on the throttle lever on the side of the carb. or injection unit. That way if the linkage breaks you don't detonate the motor.(N2O) You can buy it at most race tracks and maybe at welding shops like Roberts Oxygen. (they deal with more than just welding products.)

NItrous Oxide Gas, NO2
Not illegal, but special engine conditions must exist to use it.
NOS is a brand name for the system to deliver it to the engines intake, there are other.
The way it works is that it delivers more oxygen to the engine, which allows it to burn more fuel more efficiently; creating more power. The nitrogen has no effect positive or negative because about 73% of the earths atmosphere is made up of nitrogen.

It is NOT the same as laughing gas, that is a slightly different compound in a different mixture.

nitrous oxide...and yes its legal, but I don't recomend using it for ILLEGAL street races, showing off on a city street or anything else you saw (like in The Fast And the Furious Trilogy) other than a controlled race on a controled track....Safety first dude.
