Sounds like you become overwhelmed when singled out, when everyone's eyes are on you, and everyone is expecting an answer. Sounds like a little bit of anxiety. Unfortunately, successive negative experiences like this hinder future instances. The first time this happened, you were probably surprised. Perhaps, in instances after this, you began thinking about it before you were even called on by your prof/teacher. So, now you are not only less than confident when the teacher/prof calls on you, but you are anticipating feeling the way you have in the past when asked.

I really think you need to nip this in the butt. Talk to your doctor about it. You need to extinguish this conditioned response.

Raise your hand a lot on all of the easy questions that you REALLY know the answer to..most teachers try to get many participants during the times of Q & A. When the more complex questions roll around the teacher will probably pick someone else out of a sense of fairness to the class. As you get more practice with the easy questions you may become more comfortable answering questions you are a little unsure about. Furthermore, by volunteering to answer you give yourself power over the situation and hence a little more confidence...

Talk to the prof/teacher privately about this. You probably have some level of anxiety about answering questions in class based on negative past experiences. Most of them will be very understanding, but may want you to participate for credit. Instead of waiting to be asked, make sure you prepare for class and volunteer to answer when you can contribute to discussion. That way, you won't be called on as much....(just a hint from a teacher :)

you can talk to your teachers before class and let them know that you get extremely anxious when called on in class. Depending in the teacher, they may understand and do things to help you. One suggestion (if your teachers are up for suggestions) is to always choose you after a specific other person, that way, you'll know when he's going to call on you and that may eleviate some of your anxiety. He may also choose not to call on you at all, the only problem with that is he won't know if you understand what is being said in the classroom.

Some classes invovle a lot of class participation and it is even part of the mark. I'd talk to your teacher and try to work it out with him.

Get to know your subject. Then realize that the teacher was in your very same position years ago. We were not born with all of the answers. Many teachers only know what they read last night. Do not let them intimidate you. But if you do not know your subject you will be forever timid.
