And just who were "their own people"? Their government? The villages had leaders and elders not formal governments as we did. And I don't think they lined up their best warriors, women and children and traded them for a bolt of silk. That would have (and did do that when we abducted them) leave them vulnerable to other tribes and other predators. I say other predators because we were their most unrelenting and cruel predators they had.

If you truly believe this you are buying into a myth some people use to justify what we (white people) did to the tribes of Africa. It is much like saying "the Indians sold us Manhattan for a few baubles." and then try to justify it by saying they shouldn't have sold the land if they wanted it, so it is really their own fault. The Indians never sold Manhattan because they did not believe anyone should own the land.

I don't claim to be an expert in African History. There were I am sure people who "sold out" their own people. Perhaps it was a form of State or National government, but don't confuse them with the tribes that had no contact with them. That makes a big difference in perception.

There IS NO excuse for the things we have done over the years. However, I do agree we should work harder to become Americans and not a country divided by color and culture. That is NOT to say we should forget the past because by forgetting history we set ourselves up to repeat it and that would be a tragedy even worse than the first time because we should KNOW better.

So I would say - no they don't know - and neither do I - and neither do you.

Yes, we do. We also know that their concept of servitude was in no way informed about the cruelty slaves would endure in America. In African cultures slaves were often freed into the societies of the conquering nations after so many years. They were housed and fed humanely until that time.
We are also aware that slavery has been in existance since the beginning of recorded time. It is recorded in the bible. Because of their disobedience to God, Isreal was enslaved century after century at a time.
Did you know that Moroccan slavers sold and still sell white people (primarily women) into slavery?

I've wondered that myself. I've never heard anyone preach that their own people, or leaders of a warring tribe sold them for slaves, yet it's a fact.

I suppose it's the same that we never hear about all the other races, including Caucasians, that have been slaves at one time or another. Many of the Europeans that came to America came as slaves and indentured servants.

you are correct in that africans sold each other as slaves before europeans did. however, the difference is that the purpose wasn't to subjugate millions of people and subject them to horrors which never should be bestowed upon another human being. it was a tribal thing. when one village or tribe fought against another in war, the losers became slaves of the winners. they were not tortured, but they were considered property. europeans went in and captured and even stole africans and brought them to america because they were lazy and greedy. they couldn't harvest their own crops so they enslaved africans to do their dirty work.
