I have to be honest...before I was pregnant, I only had two pelvic exams in my life (I'm 29 years old). I dreaded both of them and put them off for YEARS because I was so terrified of having them done. Now that I'm 39 weeks pregnant, I am soooo used to them. I had one pelvic in the beginning of my pregnancy...now they check me every week. I've gotten to the point where I just don't care anymore. The fact that every pregnant woman goes through it eases my mind a bit. I've actually really looked forward to the exams because they tell me how much I'm effaced and dilated (which is kind of fun to hear when you're this pregnant).
So..to answer your question...you will have one pelvic exam in the beginning, you'll get your blood taking a couple of times, then you'll have a pelvic exam every week starting at week 36 or so (depending on your doctor). It's really no big deal. You other monthly check-ups will just include a urine test, blood pressure test, and they take your weight. Then the doc asks you how things are going...answers any of you questions...then sends you on your way. I hope this helps!

alot of course you get all the blood work(to test for HIV(optional to be tested for) all blood related disease) a pap smear( to test for cancer, hpv, everything), the quad marker(which is to test down syndrome) you do glucose test to see if you have gestational diabetes, and a urine test at every prenatal visit so the can check for protein, glucose, and uti and bladder infection a pregnancy is just one big medical exam! most of them are optional but not all towards the end all the do is check you to see if you are dilating which is like having a million pap smears NOT FUN! i know what you mean as far as hating pap smears! you think i would be use to it by now but hell no it still makes me mad every time i have to go in! just don't like people down there! but if you think of the reason you are getting one it makes it worth it! when you are pregnant and have never been pregnant you only have to do it yearly when your pregnant you have to get one at the beginning and like 500 at the end so if you hate that is a good reason to not get pregnant for a long while

In the begining you must have lots of blood work done along with the routine visit things like blood pressure monitoring, weight checks, urine testing, and checking the baby's heartbeat EVERY VISIT. Then when you get further along you have more blood work panels to do for such things as gestational diabetes. If you are really (un)lucky like me, you will have to do a 24 hour urine sample in which you must pee in a container for 24 hours and keep refrigerated-then return to lab to check the protein.ketones in the urine. I ended up having to take insulin every night for my situation because diet simply was not controlling my sugars. Also, if you are high risk as I am because of the gestational diabetes you will have to go for weekly ultrasounds and non stress tests two times a week where they hook your belly up to alert the computer when you have contractions and to monitor the baby's heartrate. Once you reach about 38 weeks, the doctor will check your cervix to see if it is dilating-which is not that pleasant...I think that is it, though. It sounds like alot, but its not that bad.

I'll just add in the glucose test which isn't a ton of fun but thrilling if/when you pass.
It involves drinking a super sugary orange soda then just sitting around for one hour until they can take your blood. I hate soda so this was really gross to me. You have to chug the whole thing in 5 min. Luckily, I passed and got to eat ice cream all summer.
and
The strep B test which just sucked on many, many levels.
It's a test for something that can affect the baby during labor. It involves q-tips, the stirrups, and a very uncomfortable minute.

well the routine exam or physical. Plus some blood work and a ultra sound ( which is the FUN part) other then that is mainly pee and blood work if it is a nornmal healthy pregnancy. Nothing too bad.
