Many white people with dark features tend to be either Italian or Jewish. If he has darker features like Italians or Jews are thought to have, then that is probably why he gets asked that in NY.

Because there are a lot of Italians and Jews in NYC.
People don't know, they go by feature and complexion.

perhaps he has curly dark hair, brownish skin and beautiful brown eyes? Could fit alot of Mediterranean cultures.
