You will want to use a rust preventive paint. KBS Coatings makes a product call RustSeal that will stop that rust. http://www.kbs-coatings.com/Rust-Sealers-C27.aspx
You can clean, etch, and seal your rust with their 3 step system. After that you can topcoat with your automotive paint.

You need to have the rusted spots sanded, primed, and painted. A body shop is a good investment. Primer will not take away rust. It is used to cover bare metal before paint is applied. Painting over rust, will still leave the rust there, eating away at the metal under the paint. You can remove rust by sanding it off until you get to clean, shiny metal or cutting it out and welding in a panel for larger areas. I would leave it to a professional body repair for best results.

Rust is the result of bare metal oxidizing with other contaminants but usually water or moisture. To prevent the rust, primer is a oil based paint type that adheres to the metal at the atomic level and prevents the water, moisture or other contaminants from oxidizing the metal. Primer is sold even at Walmart or local hardware stores. Try Krylon brand primer, it sprays on like paint and works really well. It runs about $3-5 dollars a can. I hope this helps you out and the best of luck to you and your family.

You can get "rust stopper" but most likely the rust is coming from inside to the out. Fix up what you think is unsightly and sell this vehicle unless you don't mind it. Good luck. Buy a Subaru, they have lifetime rust-free guarantee.

This may sound a little silly, but it does work, I've tried it before, and it did work. Soak a sponge in Coke a colla, then use it to remove the rust on your car, after you remove it, you can use nail polish there after it dries to keep the rust from coming back.
