Worked in Endoscopy for 10 years. I am an RN and my ONLY job during the procedure was to monitor the patient. I gave the medications (conscious sedation) at the Dr's direction and then he devoted himself to the procedure and I kept my attention on the patient's response to the medications and the procedure.
As someone else stated there are always risks to medical procedures. Endoscopes are really safe pieces of equipment when handled by a competent physician. In 10 years we never lost a patient. And we preformed these procedures on hundreds of outpatients as well as many patients in the intensive care units.
And I have had both an EGD and a colonoscopy.

Ive gotten both colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time, and im only 15 and still alive. Nobody has ever died from an endoscopy. Its a simple procedure, usually lasting about half an hour. There are plenty of people there to monitor you like rn's and the anesthialogist as well as the doctor preforming the procedure.

I have never heard of any deaths from an endoscopy. But; I just had an endoscopy and colonoscopy 3 weeks ago. I postponed both tests out of fear until I could no longer cope with the stomach pain and discomfort. I can not believe how easy both tests were; they are over before you know it and with the new amnesia drug they use it seems like it took 2 minutes. Now, they are treating me for gastritis and a hiatal hernia and I am beginning to feel a little better.

If you have to have these tests; please do not fear, I wish I would not have wasted a few months then maybe I would have been on my way to recovery much sooner.

Hi!
Scope procedures are really pretty common, and really pretty safe. As with any medical procedure, there is a risk for complications, but death resulting from an endoscopy is rare. The pts. are usually given conscious sedation and medicine for pain, which increases the risk abit, but there are alot of safeguards in place. There is an emergency cart very nearby, with emergency medications within reach. And the drs. and nurses are very well trained to handle any problems. My husband and mother, uncle and sister in law had them and they didn't remember anything, and said the worst part was worrying about it. I've had patients tell me that it wasn't bad at all, and most of our patients go home pretty quickly after the procedure. Good luck, and be sure to talk to your dr. and share your concerns with her/him, too.

I have never heard of anyone dieing during one.... There is risks with any procedure. ie-allergic reaction to the sedative they use, abnormalities that would make it dangerous to do (usually they pick up on this before the procedure). I have assisted in numerous of these procedures and I have never had anyone with an adverse reaction...
