I notice that only gay guys can detect when another guy is gay. Straight guys seem to never detect even some of the most flamboyant homosexuals.

Well, we're the only ones that "look."

When living in small town's or even medium sized ones, you tend to start searching for others of your kind, keenly developing your gaydar. I used to have to make eye contact, see the clothes, etc. Now, I can just look and say "yes or no." Someone will tell me "no, he's married," and I just laugh, then a few months later they come back and say, "you know what, they just split up, he's gay . . . " it half-way p*sses me off because theirs usually kids involved, but the the other 1/2 says well if society didn't make being gay "so bad" he wouldn't have had to hide it. So I just say, "told you so" and leave it at that. Mainly I think our gaydar is built on a sense of not wanting to be alone. Not that I've ever picked up a guy that way, I haven't. But because, when I go home, I think "wow, I'm not all alone in the world after all."

I would guess it is because most gay men have spent time developing their gaydar. A straight guy has little interest in finding gay guys, so he doesn't work at it.

Uh, I have gaydar and I'm a straight female... same with some of my other friends. Infact mine is so good I've made calls on people before they even knew they were in the closet.

... it's called a sixth sense... also a familiarity with people with that sexual orientation... and living in the San Francisco area =P

It's not only gay men that have gaydar. I have the finest tuned gaydar around. Then again...I'm a drag queen stuck in a woman's body so I guess that doesn't count, dahling!

hospitalbed_shade_ofblue,
I think that straight guys can be polite and just not say anything. At least many of the ones I've known do that.

A lot of times they wait until after the encounter is over to say something.

Part of that can be to showoff manliness. The other part is because they were really appalled.

That's been my experience anyway.

Why would a straight guy want to detect it would it be because he wouldn't mind trying something different? If so I don't see anything wrong with that.

It's not exactly the first thing on a heterosexual man's mind to spot a gay man. He's more looking out for the girl voted most likely to put out on the first date.

Gay males have gaydar because we are always horny and looking to get off. It gnaws away at us until we s*ck a c*ck.
