Actually, all the divisions except 1-A have playoffs. There are arguments on both sides as to why a playoff or the bowls are better. Personally, I think there should be an 8-team playoff using the bowl game sites to play the games. That way, the season isn't too long and the bowls still get to host their game. We already have 30 freaking bowl games, so I don't see why a playoff for the title would be so bad. Use the BCS system and rank the teams 1-8 based on strength of schedule and etc and play it out!

A playoff system sponsored by the NCAA would be too much of a change from the current BCS system. A smaller change is more probable within the already existent system. My idea is to keep the four BCS games - the top two (BCS rankings) teams that win their game would advance to a championship.
Example:
Week 1
Rose Bowl : #1 OSU def. #6 USC
Orange Bowl: #11 FSU def. #5 WVU
Sugar Bowl: #2 Notre Dame def. #4 Auburn
Fiesta Bowl: #3 Texas def. #8 Florida
Week 2
Championship Game: #1 OSU def. #2 Notre Dame
I know its a small change but it is a first step towards a playoff.

Sure a playoff would be great, but the fact that everyone is ignoring is the amount of relative participation.
Teams that go to bowl games get one post-season shot. That gives a total of forty something teams that showcase their talent.
A playoff would include 16 teams (32 means too many games) and the top two teams would get 4 post season games.
Possible the lower tier bowl games could remain, as consolation to the uninvited teams.
The NCAA will not change unless the change will be profitable.

Its all about holding the Little Man down. Teams like Utah and Boise State a few years ago are a prime example. The big boys wouldn't even play them for fear of losing to an "inferior" program. Since they never got to play, the argument stands as the little schools are not good enough to complete because the big schools won't let them.
The Rose Bowl is dropping out of the BCS. (Big 10/Pac10) These conferences don't want to see UNLV and Princeton in their premiere game. It's all about the money to the big schools, not money that could be earned for the entire NCAA.
It works in College Basketball, and it is very profitable. Why doesn't it work in College Football? There are already plenty of Bowl Games to pick from to allow for a 16 or 24 team playoff system, they just won't do it. They'll blame tradition, or "The entire season is a playoff system" or a few other things for it, but its all about the money, Greed from the big conferences and holding the Little Man down.

I think that if there are multiple teams with the best record then their should be a playoff but for teams that are the only school to go undefeated like texas last year and the 2002 Buckeyes they deserve he championship
other than that I would say that their should be a playoff of teams with one or less losses
which would make every game important
thats what I like about college football you have to take every game seriously not like pro sports where the best team can loose to the worst time and it makes no difference at all
every single game counts

The major conferences would lose too much revenue and power. A playoff would allow for smaller schools and conferences to potentially showcase talent. The sponsor's for the bowl games would then start to ask to see more of these type of teams. Can you imagine a team like Central Florida making as much revenue as Florida State?

The schools make so much money on bowl games, they are not going to give those up for a playoff system.

There's too much money tied up in the various bowl games to make a playoff do-able.

The BCS schools are scared to death that a non-BCS school might win.
Here is a good editorial on the subject.
