Here is my dilema - I currently have 1gb (2x512mb sticks) of Kingston HyperX RAM, If I wanted to up that to 2gb, do I need to use the same type of ram, and can I just put 1 1gb stick in there and have 2x512 and 1x1gb sticks or will that not work?

I have a mobo that has 4 ram slots that can handle 4gb

Every 2 slots are a Channel.
This means u can take 1 stick and insert it into a slot to make a channel a single channel, as in only 1 stick will be used.
Or u can take 2 identical sticks and combine them to make a dual-channel.

As RAM sizes get larger, it is probably more "future-proof" to buy nothing less then 1GB sticks now adays. And that will also work with ur system, along with ur other 2 sticks.

the 1gb stick with 2 512's should work as long as you have the slots for it

Well, I'd go to the website for your computer and check the specs, and maybe see what that combo would do..
It should work, but, better to check with the techs, than not and blow out your machine.
