The democratic party started out being very conservative. The republican party started out much more liberal. Sometime before the turn of the century - after lincoln and before Teddy Roosevelt, the parties started to flip flop. FDR started to make the party more worker friendly and more tolerant.

The Democratic party of old was many farmers, lower income people, and blue collar workers. After the civil war, the anti-reconstructionists, which is what the original KKK was (not a white power hate group), were members of the Democratic party.

The Republicans on the other hand were originally opposed to Slavery and for improving the lives of the underpriviledged farmers across America. They passed the first income tax, created grants for land, they were for equal voting rights for freed slaves, and were for advancement of America. William McKinley was the turning point for the Republican party, moving it towards the conservatism that it endears now. He strongly used the business world for endorsements. He relied on the middle class for support. Into The New Deal, republicans often opposed the 'free money' approach of this radical plan to help during the depression. From there, the republicans become more of the traditional party that we are aware of.
