I never like seeing questions like this. Your pump and filter are sized to turn over your pool water at least 1.5 times in a 24 hour period. If you run it less than 16 hours per day, you aren't filtering that water, nor are you sanitizing it all. This will come back to haunt you if the bather load increses (# of swimmers) or if the weather gets rainy or hot and humid .If this is an EZ Set pool, I'm afraid that little thing they call a pump and filter, barely even meets a once a day turnover when it's running full time. They are terribly undersized. If , on the other hand, this pool was upgraded to an slightly oversized sized pump and filter, delivering a turnover in 8 hours (unfortunately, rarely do above ground kits have a pump/filter sized this way), then 8 hours is minimum run time. I shudder to think of what's living in water not filtered or properly sanitized, as some of these people are advocating.

scubabob is correct in that you should at LEAST run it no less than 8 hours a day.

when you do not properly run your cleaning equipment you can run into all sorts of issues....algae, damage to your pools plaster, lines, damage to seals in equipment....

the suggestions are set up the way they are to get the longest performance of your equipment and pool with the least amount of damage.

I run 4 hours a day, I live in south Texas in a very hot climate, your weather will factor in to how long you need to run to maintain your pool.

You can't have too big of a pump. Well, I suppose you could but you know what I mean.
