No, because they usually tie-in to each other and also depends on a certain large story arc that X-over between the two issues.

The books are within the same continuity, but presently have entirely separate casts of mutants. Both teams are based at Xavier's Mansion though, so they run into each other from time to time. Astonishing X-Men is along with them too. Ultimate X-Men, however, is not.

The guy below me clearly does not read comics...or if he does he's not paying attention. The two teams meet each other all the time.

I"ve been an x-men fan for many years; but i'm not sure of the exact difference between the two titles or which came first; i do recall that they may have different x-men in their story lines; or one may occurr in the future or in the past; you don't have to read one to understand the other; but it may help if u aren't familar with the x-men. Hope this helps..:)

no you dont have to read one to follow the other and they dont always follow the same timeline, there is parts but not for the whole thing!

x-men sometimes follow the same time-line but they morph in and out.No you don't have to read one to understand other.
they also have Wolfe's own comic and gambit too. enjoy

but they do cross over alot and some story-lines run back and forth between the 2.
