Textbooks don't have to be so expensive if you're willing to buy used. There is probably a local place where you can go. In addition check out half.com for great deal. Also go back there at the end of the semester to sell back your books for much much more than any local store will buy them from you.

As for college being expensive that is a highly complicated question. How expensive is it? Are you in a state school? Then you're better off than most. Though state subsidies have been cut nationally in recent years and I doubt that's going to stop.

The simple answer is that running a school is just that expensive. Only the very few select ivy's like Harvard and Yale have massive endowments in the billions. Even then those schools are far from cheap. Simple campus maintenence, building new buildings, keeping the best faculty on staff and happy, providing on campus services and dining, funding school clubs and activities, national advertising and recruiting at high schools, keeping up the dorms, paying for sports programs of which most are not profitable (except major football and basketball schools), updating technology on campus, providing internet, and the list continues.

I took a class on the economics of universities and sadly it realy does that cost much to run a college. So get the most out of it, but it's not worth complaining about it. College will only get more and more expensive. Best of luck with loans or scholarships.

Btw, if your books are really too expensive, you can always do all your studying at the library and use their copies for free.

It is appalling that education in this country is always touted as a topic for election, but funding is consistently cut. Get on Arnold and your congressman about this.

The government has nothing to do with the price of text books. The companies that print the books do.

Professors choose the books they want used for their class. So if you want to blame someone for the price of the books you need, blame them.

College is expensive because of the future earnings that you can make from getting an education from one. They are giving you the tools to make a lot of money in a career you will (hopefully) love. If you want a free education, then finish high school and then get that job and be done with school. If you want to really reach your full potential, do what the rest of us have done - credit, loans and grants.

Because colleges and universities are run by liberal educators and administrators that live off bloated salaries, and waste a fortune giving free education to select minorities. They don't really care if you learn anything. That is why there are so many morons with college degrees. Of course, the system is rigged so that if you don't have a college degree, you can't hardly earn a decent living. Therefore, the only option is to pay a fortune for your education, then get a job and pay back the debt. Hopefully it won't take the rest of your life to pay the debt back.

College is actually not expensive. Your potential salary goes up dramatically by your level of education. Now, you do have a cashflow problem, because you need to pay your education before you can reap the benefits. That's how student loans and grants come into play.

Okay, that being said you may be able to buy the books from a senior student or buy it used on Amazon.

um Arnold has nothing to do with that, i live in michigan and they are over 100 also, so that would mean that Granholm has something to do with it. It has been like this forever. The only thing you can do to change it is have the state gov. spend all of the tax money towards us college students, which is pretty much a stupid idea

Colleges are so expensive because they have to pay for many things. They not only have to pay for your education but they have to pay a lot of money for research because the research is what draws good professors there. They also have to pay to maintain the buildings, to pay for your food, etc. If you think about it, college isn't all that expensive if you factor in all of your living expenses. It would cost more if you were living alone in an apartment because you'd need to pay rent, pay utility bills/phone bills, you'd need to pay for food, you'd need to pay a lot of money for entertainment (unlike the cheap entertainment provided by universities) Although prices are out of hand at many private universities ($40,000+ a year is rediculous) most public/state universities are still barely taking in enough money to maintain their educational programs.

The costs of operating a good university are pretty high. Your faculty is made of very intelligent, very well-educated people. They need to be paid somewhat well in order to keep them from going to much more lucrative positions in the private sector. In addition, research projects can be very expensive. Telescopes, high-end microscopes, mass spectrometers, DNA labs...all of these things are expensive. All of these costs are spread out among all students, even if they never use this particular equipment.

I heard that some universities have begun to investigate the increase in prices of textbooks and a law suit may result.

Good luck. Try buying them on Half.com and save yourself some money.
