I came across a story on The Drudge Report about an airliner in the U.K. which was kept on the runway for seven hours with over 300 passengers aboard. One of the passengers who spoke to the press is named Peter Sidebottom. This is the name that prompted my question.

I hated my first name when I was a kid but now that I'm older, I'm able to appreciate it more since my name can be called and 20 other females don't say "What?!"

As for my last name, I keep telling my dad that I'm going to marry a Smith, Jones, Brown, Garcia, I don't care! Just as long as someone can look at it and pronounce it correctly.

It all depends on the name. I had an aunt named Nanny Loony - She changed it al soon as possible to Nanny Lunea still unusual but not so demeaning. My very best friend is named August and I love it (interestingly enough, she was born on July 31st - go figure) She also has a brother named Seven. They must have given really good drugs while a woman was in labor back then! Just kidding.

And then, (believe me, this is the TRUTH) I was office manager for a doctor several years ago. We had a family with 3 young girls. There names were - Female - pronounced Fe-MAA-lee. Then there was - Syphilis - pronounced - Sy-FAA-liss. And last but far from least was Gonorrhea - pronounced - Gu-NOR-ee-ah. If that woman was NOT on drugs she should be shot!!!! I also have a friend with the last name Screws. He is very shy and when his name is called on the intercom (he is a nurse) his face still turns red.

So you see in my opinion it completely depends upon the name itself and how the person feels about it. No one should have to go through life with a name they are ashamed of.

Yes i would keep it, its what makes peter sidebottom peter sidebottom, not peter Chavez, not Peter Douglas, peter sidebottom. Unless of course I was a teacher then I would definitely change it because kids would just make fun of it.

I would definitely change it. It is a distraction. I suppose it could be beneficial if you want to be remembered, but I'd rather be remembered for something other than a weird name. I actually met someone today with a very unusual name and I feel sorry for her -- she's a young child.

Well, I guess it would depend on the name, but I'd like to think I'd keep it, but then, with the name of Sidebottom, I'd have to give is some serious thought. God Bless you.

I have an unusual name, and I rather like it. If I didn't, I would have changed it a long time ago... Besides, at least I know I will probably be the only Atreadia in a group...

why change anything? I don't consider my name unusual but I'm the only one in the phone book with this name in a city of 1.4 million. Go figure! It's just a name and it could be worse, you might have been named a number.

I would probably change something like that, but some names are so unusual that they are cool. Sidebottom however isn't one of them.

I'd keep it all the way. One of my drama professor's has the last name Midget and she's really tall. She kept it so that when she went to big auditions people would laugh at her name and remember her.

I am keeping mine.

Sidebottom sounds like a character from Harry Potter!
