Worldwide peace is extremely difficult; however, I believe it is possible (but would require a massive rehauling of the world's...)
Education. That's right, education. We need to start from the younger generations, and teach them important values then. To negotiate, to consider the life of a single other person more than their own. Also, it should be somewhat conservative; i.e. even something as small as wearing uniforms, and separating into all boys, all girls schools, because it teaches them responsibility, and more importantly, it teaches them discipline.
And Discipline is the key. These children, once they grow up, they would live in a world where everyone considers the other first, in a respectable and responsible manner.
That, however, is a utopia.

It is impossible to completely change the world, but killing us all is also not a solution. Great few people like Gandhi or Madam Theresa have at least contribute their share to world peace. Though they are now dead and the world has not been changed much, but they have touched and inspired many people.
You can have your share, too. Start from yourself. Maybe you won't live long enough to see world peace, but what you start will create a wave of changes. In a hundred or two hundred of years, world peace would eventually be realized. And you will be smilling at it from God's heavenly throne in heaven.

k b said it all. Kill everyone including all animals, insects...every living creature except one. Who wants to live in a world with total peace anyhow? What would we talk about?
"Oh, Harold, did you hear? Nothing at all happened yesterday."
"Wow, really? Nothing happened the day before that either!"
Without evil, there can not be good. Besides, what is good for one is evil for another. One person's "freedom fighter" is another one's "terrorist". One person's "Crusader" is another one's "barbarian". While some acts are virtually unanimously evil (9/11), others are harder to classify. Did Israel or Hammas start the recent war? Who won the war? Who was the victim and who was the perp? This is a rhetorical question, so please don't answer.

Frankly, I can't see a way to stop this train wreck in a peaceful manner. The only way I can figure to change this would be almost absolute destruction which would allow the race to start over.

I kind of think it's gone too far to stop world war 3 now. All we can do on an individual basis is to practice non-violence, and pray for peace on earth.

Unfortunately, there can never be peace in this life. It was never intended to be, because we were given free will and many try to force others to believe and live the way that they want instead of allowing others to live as they choose.

You can only create peace within yourself. Once that occurs you become like a star on the planet. When enough stars light up, we will have our world peace.
Peace.

Look to how children are interacted with, most will only comply when there is a reward offered or they see a butt- whuppin coming. Same with rest of the world. Peace is only attainable through compensation or superior fire-power!

As nice as world peace sounds, it simply won't happen given humanity and the ability of free will.

Abolish all but one person. There would then be noone to cheat and the world would be at peace.
