Breaststroke--Make sure to do the two hand touch!! If you don't you could get disqualified if they catch you!
Starts(Dive off block)--Don't dive off before they blow the horn or whatever they use thats another way to get disqualified.
To increase you time it depends what stroke your swimming.
Freestyle--Make sure fingers stay together! If they don't then the water is just going through your fingers and your not pulling the water. Also what helps is throwing the water when your arm is pulling.
Backstroke--Same thing really, but don't look behind you like at the wall,it just slows you down!
Breaststroke--Make sure to glide! The advantage of this stroke is the gliding part of it!
Butterfly--Be in full body motion! It's kinda like the worm sort-of.
And just don't forget the movement to it,it's kinda like dancing too!
Starts(Which is your dives)--That is probably the most important part of it! The further you dive out,the more advantage you have!
So push of the block as far as possible!
Flip-turning--It's tricky but w/ lots of practice it's possible to get!
It's basically a sumersalt underwater and you push off the wall!
If you know how to that, then you have the edge on lots of others!
Don't over eat! You could get real bad cramps! Eat light but not too light! If you don't eat at all you will not have any enegry and could even pass out!Water is also great to drink at the meet. But do NOT drink a whole bottle, that could lead to cramps as well! Swim caps keep your hair back and makes you swim faster. Before you dive make sure your goggles are on tight enough so they don't fall off while swimming.Good Luck!!!
Have fun!!! Anymore questions? Feel free to e-mail me at JerseyLeyBabE@yahoo.com

Relax. Be ready to swim, right event, heat and lane. Get on the block when the referee whistles and when take your mark is said, take your stance and hold it until the horn goes off. Foward motion will get you DQ'ed.
For the most part, in Back & Free once you touch the wall you can turn in any manner desired. In other words, you don't have to do a flip turn, albeit it's faster. The majority of DQ's in a meet are backstroke turns beacause they are "non continuous"
Breast, you may use 1 butterfly kick on the start but after that it's a cycle stroke, pull, kick in that order. Make sure you don't have a scissors kick and make sure you touch with TWO HANDS. The turn is the same for butterfly.
All the rules are listed at:

Most swimmers get DQ'ed at some point in their swimming career so learn from it if you do. Good luck and keep practicing. Ask your coach for help if you need it.

Here's some advice:
1. Always do flip turns in free and back
2. Never use butterfly kick on breast (DQ)
3. When you come off the wall on a turn, kick when your still sideways
4. When doing butterfly and breast ALWAYS touch with two hands (DQ if u use only 1)
5. on your streamlines for back and free use butterfly kick...
6. Count your strokes from the flags to the wall in the pool before the race. This will bake it so you know how close to the wall you are...
I have more stuff if u want to know but always remember... *****Butterfly kick is the most powerful and when you can use it... USE IT!!!!

talk to your coach about what things will DQ you. if youre doing fly or breaststroke make sure to touch the wall with two hands at the same time. dont false start more than once. stay in your lane and swim the right event/stroke. the only way you can cut off time is to leanr from your mistakes and you wont know them until after your first meet. go out and have fun, DQ's are relativley rare.

dont dive in before the whistle, dont let your feet touch the ground, umm if your in a relay dont leave before the other swimmer touches the wall, stay in your lane pretty just swim normal and you wont get dq'd
