The paleoconservatives, who were fairly libertarian and supporters of states' rights, have been replaced in the Republican party by the neoconservatives, who favor a stronger federal goverment and using the government whenever they need to accomplish something, especially something which conflicts with their ideology. Gay marriage is a perfect example. The neoconservatives are trying to amend the constitution to outlaw it in the entire country, whereas the paleoconservatives would leave as an issue for the individual states to decide, and the libertarians would allow it. Despite what people say, the Republicans are no longer the party of limited government, and will stay that way until the neoconservative movement ends and the Republicans go back to their paleoconservative roots.
Right now, the only party of limited government, despite what the Democrats or the Republicans may say, is the Libertarians.

The Libertarian Party is the only one that proposes solutions to reduce the size of the Federal government. Both Democrats and Republicans seek Federal Government means in forwarding their agenda.

In general, the Repubs favor a smaller gov. That is one reason so many people dislike Regan. However, I have found in recent years that the Repubs must have a different meaning to smaller gov than I do. I have been thinking that I am leaning more and more to the Libertarian party ideals. However, I am hesitant to change my party as it would severely impede my ability to affect who will run for elected offices. I already can't participate in the Dem primaries. I don't want my voice censored any more than it already is.

both parties are one party.. the Rich party. The reason the Dem's are so ineffectual is because they really don't want to change anything. They are almost all above the 250k tax break point.. they also enjoy huge slush money lobbyists .. so as for small government, that's a thing of the past.. big brother is here to stay. He's gonna tell you what to wear, where your going to wear it and who you are going to wear it with ( sorry for the cloths analogy )

Another liberal question or answer? When did liberals become worried about big government ? Only when they are unable to finance their constituancy on the government dole are they concerned. They care little about American security, but more about protecting the handouts to their non-working , illiterate voters. Soon they will realize that the majority of Americans are educated, hard working folks sick and tired of supporting their freeloading base. The Democrats only want to shrink programs created by Republicans - Good or Bad.

Unfortunately that party ... oops, er, I mean "both parties" (wink wink nudge nudge) are never going to look for ways to reduce themselves.
It's time for VOTERS to stop enabling Demopublicans by voting Libertarian. Assuming the ~voters~ actually want what they ~say~ they want (trimming the government). Historically, this isn't really what they want, or they'd stop talking out of both sides of their mouths.
Politicians can only shoulder so much of the blame -- there are more of you than there are of them!

Getting both parties to work together is like inviting a black panther and a KKK member over for thanksgiving dinner. There's gonna be gravy for some and a huge mess.
