There have been Islamic Crusaders for many years. I believe that the creation of the state of Israel was the original and the major impetus for this form of extremism.
There were many kinds of extreme organizations throughout the Middle East, and when the Shah of Iran fell in the 1970's they experienced their first major victory. They also experienced another major victory when the Soviets left Afghanistan.
Today, Islamic Crusaders are trying to overthrow the governments in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq. Our troops currently in Iraq are experiencing sectarian violence first hand. Much of this violence is due to religious extremism.

The 'Islamic Rivival', as some call it, began during the taking of the American embassy in Iran, and spread during the long USSR/Afgan War. There is some truth to the assertion that it was CIA sponsored but they are not an autonomous agency as many like to believe. They have to answer to their nominal boss, the US president, who in turn answers to his patrons. The mess we're in now can be traced back to the post-WW1 division of the Middle Eastern oil-rich countries by British and USA corporations, if not all the way back to the crusades.

Muslims and Islam were oppressed, and rightly so, by the Communist regimes. When decentralization occurred they were free to associate, conspire and organize with the increased freedom to travel. The USA funded, armed and support this movement to beat up on socialist regimes. Now that they beat up on Imperialist regimes their funds, arms and support come from certain middle east countries although the West still seems to educate these little devils.

Just because they happened at the same time, don't assume there is any connection.
