Do labrets represent anything other than just a piercing?

I would like to get my lip pierced, my mom doesnt understand why. I would like to persuade her to let me get it, and i need facts to back me up. I would like to know ANYTHING at all about labrets.

It has no hidden 'meaning'.
Its just a piece of jewelry, a decoration, a way of expressing yourself.

The best way to approach your mother would be to be mature about it.
First of all, are your old enough to get it done in your area? If your not, don't even think about finding a shop that will "allow" you to get it done.By allowing you to get it done, they are going against local rules, and laws, and you have to think, if they are going against rules like that, what other laws are they slacking off with? Sanitation procedures? Trained and professional piercers?

Show you mom you are responsable by checking everything out. Know about what you have to look for in a qualified piercer, and in a clean and hygenic shop.

Honestly, get your mom online and show her the information. Bring her with you to the shop and get them to give her a tour.Get her to call the shop. I have many mom's tours and explained how we sterelized tools. A good shop will happily answer all hers and yoru questions. If they are rude, you dont want to be pierced there anyway.

Anything that can put her mind at ease shows that your mature and responsable.
Show that you've done your research.
Make sure that the shop that your being pierced at is using surgical stainless steel that is implant grade.
