Astral projection cannot be proven to be an illusion or not. Since it is said to be traveling inside another dimension, it would not necessarily allow one to interact with anything in the "real" world.
Since it is a personal experience, just like everyday life, only you can decide if it's real or not.
Now to the fun stuff.
There are all sorts of websites that give you a good idea on how to Astral project.
Www.gnosticweb.org has some great lessons, but it has a lot of religious background to them, So if your OK with trying a new religion, or willing to do a little bit of choose and cut, they are excellent.
Essentially, the trick to astral projection is relaxed concentration.
The idea is to stay aware while you fall asleep, or as others put it, for your body to fall asleep but your mind to still be awake.
Several techniques can be used, the easiest of which are either an imaginary rope, or simply concentrating on your heartbeat.
Some people can astral project easier than others, Myself, it takes unbelievable effort (at least from my point of view.) So I rarely get to do it.
Most people will be able to astral project within a few weeks, but the thing is, it's really easy to get distracted, and to wake up. It takes a lot of practice before you become proficient in things like flying, meeting people and all the other things that most people want to AP for.
Go to the website and sign up for the astral projection course, it should still be free.
You will undoubtedly learn about alchemy and a whole host of religious/spiritual ideas. They may freak you out. You can pretty much ignore them all together and just do the exercises.
It's all about concentration and repeated effort.
Here is a technique that eventually works, but may take a while.
1. Make sure you didn't eat to heavily. A light dinner, but not so little that your hungry.
2. When you start to feel really tired...(The kind where you will fall asleep in a few minutes at most.) that's the time to lay down and get ready for bed.
3. Instead of just day dreaming, falling asleep, focus on your heart beat. Don't force it, just let your attention rest on it. This is relaxed concentration.
4. After some time, usually around 10 minutes, though it's different for everyone, you will feel a floating sensation, this is normal and there is nothing wrong with you.
5. Just keep focusing on your heart beat, eventually this floating sensation will start to become a vibration tingling throughout your body, possibly much more violent than a tingle. Me personally, It feels like the cartilage is being torn from my bones, but not painfully, just a really weird feeling.
6. It's terrifying the first few times it happens, but you have to remember 3 things. The paralysis will only last until you wake up. The vibrating feeling is normal and will be over soon. And finally when you feel yourself float up above your body, don't freak out.
I personally feel my head lift up, and I sit up, but not with any effort, It's kind of like being in a turbulent ocean.
You may find that your sight is unclear, or that you are hearing things. This is normal.
7. You are there, explore and if you feel yourself starting to slip out of it, rub your hands on an object near you (in the astral) This causes you to focus on that object, which since is in the astral forces your mind to come back to the astral.
There are all sorts of weird things, like negative entities that float around and cause problems, they my jump out and scare you, wrestle you, try and terrify you at any chance, but they can't actually hurt you. Just laugh them off and move on.
Now some people will say they aren't real and it's just your brain hallucinating. Even better, go with that. Hallucinations are even less scary than some evil being from another dimension.
Hope this helps some.

Much as you want to see that person it is best not to go this way. You need to be aware of some dangers of astral projection. Astral projection is usually only made possible by some level of demonic power. They are the ones who link the spirit and soul to make astral projection possible. In a sense when you leave your body to astral project it is like leaving your home with the door open…. Bad spirits can come in.
Many who have astral projected talk about encounters with demons! Go to any astral projection discussion forum and you will find that they often say that the practice is very dangerous and that there are evil spirits out there.
Many who have astral projected have described a thin silver cord attaching their spirit to their body. If this cord is ever severed, the person will die. This fits what the book of Ecclesiastes says in chapter 12:
Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
So if one was to astral project and travel too far or long there is a chance that silver cord could break. I have heard of some people who practiced astral projection and died from it.
Also astral projection is a big spiritual activity which wears down the body. Those who practice it often age faster with drained energy.
There is a real spirit world out there. Spirits, demons, angels, God, Satan, Jesus, Souls, Spirits, Hell, Heaven, strongmen, anointing, possession etc.. are all real. It’s good that you are aware of this but you need to encounter the light first as you explore spiritual things. Watch these videos and they can open your eyes to new aspects of the spiritual war around us, and how you can be a part on the right path.

If you are interested, i recomend you read a book called 'Psychic Warrior' by David Moorehouse. It's a true story about America's psychic spies, a project called Stargate that ran in the '70's. Absolutely fascinating read, if it is true, then the human mind is a source of tremendous and unexplainable powers!

You need to meditate a lot first to rid your mind of the crap it gathers during the day. Meditation helps you reach a higher level...then you will be able to do that.
Have you ever wanted to open your eyes but you can't, and you can't even move sometimes when you're asleep? Well, I mean, you are in a conscious state, but you can't move at all, and like I said, sometimes you can't even open your eyes...well, I've noticed that when that happens to me it is easier to "travel"......just concentrate on what or who you wanna see and let your spirit travel to find that person, object or place!!! But don't be afraid when you're traveling, otherwise you will "wake up".

It's quite real, I occasionally do it, mostly by happenstance while I sleep. I'm in my 40s now, I've been doing it since I was around 6 years old. I used to be scared of it, now I realize that one day I'm going to be on the other side forever. I'm not afraid of it anymore.

I have done it a few times. I think it's more of an illusion than real.

Astral projection is not real. It's an illusion based on a specific stimulation of the angular gyrus in the brain. It's a very powerful effect, but it's all in the head.
