Wow. I'm floored. Ok, I'll try to explain this in simple terms.
People worship all kinds of things. Zeus. Buddah. Ra. Muhammed. Atahualpa. Loki. Trees. Just because someone or something existed or is written about doesn't make them gods.
Our calendar system was invented by Romans - Romulus to be exact. Nearly 800 years before Christ was said to exist. As far as BC and AD, they were adopted when the Church redid the calendar. The calendar existed, they just modified it. It shows no proof of a god. It's a remnant of another time. Actually, the religiously neutral American Anthropological Association uses CE and BCE, for Common Era and Before Common Era to keep the calendar from being religiously based.
Calendars existed long before AD and BC. Try doing some research on the Aztecs. Their calendar was far more accurate than the Roman one, and certainly wasn't based on his life or death.

I'll answer the second question first : To the victors go the spoils. The dominant culture gets to make the rules. There are other civilizations on this planet that don't follow the Christian calender, the Chinese and the Jews for instance.
The reason that there is such a buzz about Christ many years after his death is that Paul-nee Saul - was a marketing genius. There is an excellent book out called The Myth maker : Paul and the Invention of Christianity by Hyam Maccoby. You should read it, It is Paul who took a minor historical person who he never actually met and created a major religion around him.

Santa isnt real either, but humankind has kept the idea of him alive through the generations because it was a tradition they got from their parents and decided it would be good to pass it on to their children. A similar thing happened with Jesus and all of the other religious icons. Whether Jesus actually existed or not, the stories about Jesus had a huge impact on the society that they were created in and the writings and verbal history has been instilled in each passing generation as a valuable tradition to keep and cherish.
As for the calendar system being based on Jesus's life and death, what do you expect when the only people capable of reading and writing were priests and other men involved with the church? The church was in charge of creating the calendar.
And I hope you realize that there are many other calendars that people follow that are not based on this system.

It's kind of like OJ. If he were so innocent, why all the buzz about him so many months later!
Seems to me that you are not so sure about whether Jesus was real or just a mere prophet. So, what you are trying to do is ask why there is a whole big deal about him today if he weren't really "the man". That is very flimsy proof of his existence.
It's kind of like saying OJ must be innocent because today he plays golf and goes out to dinner, and if he were guilty, he could not do all that stuff. Some day we might be basing our dating system on OJ too; the type of girls he likes to be with and clubs he likes to go to and whatnot.
Actually, I think you sound like a little girl thumbing your nose and saying Nyah, Nyah, to all the other religions of the world........I told you so................Jesus is better than all the rest of your dumb-*** prophets!!! Oh yeah!! Yeah!! Oh yeah!!! Yeah,...........I know this because Jesus has a lot of buzz about him, and people would not be buzzing if he was just a "mere" type of prophet, now would they??
And furthermore, you atheists and "other" non-christian-like Brothers of mine, Why is it that our "WHOLE" calendar is based on HIM alone!! No, not on Brooke Burke.........on HIM alone!!!
.......................And this is how I know Jesus was real. And, I'll have you know that this was a well-intentioned and very "SINCERE" question for all my atheist and non-christian fiends out there! Oops, I've done it again, I made a little unintentional typo by leaving the "r" out of the f - word! So, now that we've established my sincerity (gosh, almost as easy as establishing HIS Realness), you dumb jerks had better get working, and come up with a much more plausible and certainly more SINCERE answer to my question. Don't you even know the christian tenet that a ""s-i-n-c-e-r-e"" question deserves a sincere answer? Why, I've been sitting here and seething for four hours now waiting for one of you numskulls to give me "any" answer to my second question!! "And not only that, why is it that our whole dating system is based on HIS.........OJ's life, if he weren't the "man"??

Jesus is a buzz because of the power and wealth of Christians, especially the Vatican. At one time, most of the world has been ruled by Christians and has been preached to by Christian missionaries.
The names of the months and the weekdays are not christian. The only calendar thing is AD and BC because the Catholic church kept track of dates and history. In this way, the Catholics/Christinas have controlled the information that people like you have.
Is this question really "sincere"? It seems insincere to me and ignorant as well.

::giving severe concept:: No, i do no longer think of so. My non secular direction is lots extra balanced and gratifying to me than Christianity became into, although in case you do eliminate the "worship me or go through for eternity" threat ingredient of it. i think that i'm an element of the international around me, no longer in basic terms some better introduction plunked down with the help of God right into a prepopulated point. It sounds corny, yet "colorings of the Wind" fairly does resonate somewhat properly with me. The rainstorm and the river are my brothers The heron and the otter are my buddies And we are all related to one yet another In a circle, in a ring that by no ability ends I cherish that feeling of interconnectedness, and that i don't sense that Christianity has the comparable attitude on it that my modern-day direction has.

If i ever do decide to pick up religion I'm thinking about making up my own because I don't want people like you asking me questions about crap like this. Just believe in what you want and stop worrying and asking questions about other people's beliefs. It's rude and you come across as if your religion is better than others. The reason why this world has so much hate is contributed by religion.

Honestly, I feel people found a way to control people with Christianity-------the Church, that is. I cannot believe G-d came to earth in human form. Or, his son, or whatever different people call it.
''OUR'' calendar? What about the Jewish calendar? The Muslim calendar? The Chinese calendar? Etc.,?

same question goes for every religion except the calander part, that goes back to the big kid on the block, the european empire with the most wealth and power set the rules on date and time and anyone that dealt with them or was conquered by them had to accept their methods

You're right; the existence of Christians in the world proves that your religion has it correct, since no other religion has been able to survive in such numbers. *eyeroll*
