I've heard that theory commented on in 2000 in a commercial on the tele that had Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) say, "I was promised flying cars! Where are the flying cars?" Needless to say that it wasn't a commercial for automobiles!

I think that in the 1960's with the space race going on with the United States and the Soviet Union and residual optimism from the decade before, we were convinced that technologies that were simple extrapolations from the technology of the time would continue unabated. However, the enthusiasm of space travel waned when man finally did set foot on the moon. We got caught up in other issues and didn't work out what turned out to be a more difficult process.

Nevertheless, despite the lack of flying cars, who in the 1960's could have imagined home entertainment systems, GPS units, pharmaceutical advancement in mental treatment, microwave ovens, computers on people's laps, and digital watches? Futurologists were wrong in many ways, not only by predicting things that didn't happen, but in failing to predict other technological wonders.

It has come up many times over the years. In the 50s, there actually was a flying car. It's just somebodies pipe dream. How many people do you know who has a pilot's license?

i dont think so and u know why it not nesseceraly cause of the technology but could u imagine if we could drive to other countries the airlines companies would lose too much money and thats "unaceptable" just like why we dont have many electric cars the big companies dont want to lose money and electric cars are a threat to gas companies the list is endless pharmacitical is another big one so to tell u the truth i dont think we will be flying anythign i our lifetime.

They planned making them for many years and in the early 80's production was started. A month later the first "speeder" was caught by police going 183 mph. After the cop told him to "pull over to that cloud"... they both got out of their cars and fell to Earth. Production was halted after that incident and the idea was never considered again. (No one thought ahead.) Oh well...maybe we are better off.

There is at least one but it costs too much.
The economics didn't make it feasible to have flying cars. I don't think we'll have "floating Interstates" in our lifetime.
The bottom 20% of income earners won't allow for the economy or society to progress.

I think people are confused and really don't know if what we want is a flying car or not.
