The Cure's album Disintegration is practically melancholy love songs from start to finish. I particularly like the tracks "Plainsong," "Pictures of You," "Last Dance," "Homesick" & "Untitled".

"Days" by The Kinks

"Almost Blue" by Elvis Costello

Peter Blegvad has a couple absolute gems in this category on his record King Strut & Other Stories: "Shirt & Comb," a love song written from the perspective of a soldier telling his wife he's been called up; and "Gold," about a couple who join the gold rush, only to die together penniless in their prospectors' shack. Both are wildly romantic for being so utterly depressing.

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division. Nearly all of Joy Division's recordings are really melancholy, but this one takes the cake, escpecially given that it was the last single recorded before their lead singer's suicide.

"Take Care" by Big Star

"If It's Really Got To Be This Way" by Arthur Alexander

"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths

"The Fairest of the Seasons" or "These Days" by Nico

"Pale Blue Eyes" or "I'll Be Your Mirror" by The Velvet Underground

Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley. That song drags me so far down, I need to stand on a ladder to tie my shoes.
