What is a good regime to get back into the books? Any tips for getting up in the morning and being totally alert in class? How can I make it through without that fattening coffee and danish every day?

I always started my day with not just the morning wake up routine, but a bit of exercise on top of it. Gets the blood moving, gets you awake faster, and you can obtain health benefits too. It doesn't matter what exercise -- whether it is walking, running, lifting weights on campus or swimming in the campus pool -- just get up and do daily exercise.

just do it. set your alarm about 10 minutes earlier than you would normally get up, and put it on the other side of the room from your bed. several alarms are even better. eat an apple for breakfast. it wakes you up much better than coffee, and it's so much healthier. to stay alert in class, chew gum and sit up front where the professor can see you.

hope this helps. I'm starting my grad school classes myself next Monday.

Wake up an hour in advance of your class. This will give you plenty of time to shower, prep yourself, get dressed, have breakfast, and just mentally get ready for class. Also, a good idea to check your email in case your professor emails you and you have the day off. Those are always nice :)

try eating a breakfast high in protien. this will give you more energy and you won't become hungry so fast. anything with peanut butter will help (granola bar, apples, etc). i wouldn't recommend any "energy drinks", just a good night's sleep and enough time to wake up and gather your thoughts before class. you also might want to consider taking a multi-vitamin every morning. if you're allowed to eat in class, take your breakfast with you (dry cereal, etc). munching on the cereal during class might keep your mind from wandering too far...
