The U.S. military is registering all guns in Baghdad, and is confiscate illegal (presumably unregistered) weapon. Does this mean gun control is useful in preventing violence?

It depends on who you ask. Iraq is far far far too complicated an issue to simplay say:

1. They tried registering all guns.
2. Violence did no cease.

Therefore: Gun registration does not stop violence.

This is faulty logic because it ignores the differences between cultures as well as the social/political/and economic conditions of that country, which are all now very unstable. It's not a good sample; registration might work in certain combinations of Place A and Place B and Situation X and Situation Y, but it's never a simple issue.

What is likely happening is the people that pretend to be on our side get to keep their guns while the people that don't agree with us have "illegal weapons" that have to be confiscated.

Like anything, it's all political...

My personal opinion is it will control the violence somewhat, just as we control it in the U.S. somewhat. It also depends on what measures they take to locate the unregistered weapons. Team up for a house to house search and seize would be a good start. This should have been in forced in the beginning.

It won't work at all, the insurgents will just purchase arms illegally.
