These little critters are shaped liked little frogs, except their skin has scales like a lizard. They move very slowly, i can easily pick one up with a shovel. Are they toads? Are they good or bad? I never saw them before, but this year there are quite a few. I live in zone 5, SE michigan, suburban detroit

Cool! I haven't been doing anything to the little buggers, but they do freak me out a bit, when they jump out of nowhere when you least expect it

Toads and lizards, regardless of which it is, they're both great! They eat your bugs and help you grow your plants! It's a good sign that you have a healthy eco-system going on!

Do you think that you have horned toads? Look 'em up on the internet to see what horned toads look like. If you do, then you have something that's become more of a rarity in the U.S.....horned toads are also great to have in the garden, btw.

I agree with Scaper...toads are quite nice to have in the garden. I leave a couple of broken pots for houses and a huge onyx ash tray I found at a flea market (full of water) for them in the herb bed. Toads do eat lots of insects you don't want in the veg. garden. If you're interested in keeping your toad helpers, cut out the insecticides, if you use any, as the chemicals will eventually get to your toads through their meals.

Toads are good for the garden but pesky when I mow. Always shutting down the mower and moving them to a safer place. Found at least ac dozen of them today. The baby ones are hard to spot, but they sure are cute

Sounds like toads to me. And yes...they're very good for your garden. They help keep the bug population down.

Toads in the garden is a sign of a very healthy garden. Enjoy them...they're like little helpers.

very good for the garden, if you have toads in your garden you can cut back on some of the pesticides, those little bug eating machines.
break out the side of a couple old Terra cotta flower pots and turn them upside down to provide daytime shelter.

Toads are good. I heard of this woman who every summer would have a hot dog cookout for the neighbor hood children, and the price for admission was one toad.

I would say yes, since that is an environmental indicator. Seeing frogs, toads, or any sort of amphibian or lizard is definately a good thing.
