I am looking into being a mortician, preferrably an embalmer versus doing funeral services. I looked it up, yet i am still confused as to where to begin, who to talk to about it first, and how long do i need to go to school for. Has anyone else done this? If so, is it hard? I have no problem with seeing and working with dead people, because my job requires me to do post-mortem blood draws, in which i stick a needle all the way down their chest cavity into their heart for blood. Would this be considered extra background credit as well? Thanks a bunch!

I am a licensed funeral director in two states, and I find the job to be extremely rewarding. I went to the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, it was a 20 month program and I have an associate's degree in funeral management and a diploma in funeral directing and embalming. I really enjoy embalming, but I also love to make funeral arrangements. I wish I could recommend a school in Texas, but the only one that I know of in the South is Gupton-Jones in GA. Try looking on the website for NFDA (National Funeral Director Association) They have links for people interested in careers in funeral service. Hope this helps, God bless and good luck!!

I know at one time there used to be a professional magazine titled American Mortician. You might try contacting them. Good luck!

Not a science question but, you may want to contact Pierce Mortuary College.

Yes you can, but try and get jobs working with people. Ultimately those jobs are more rewarding. If you are shy, you can learn to overcome it.
