Nothing too cheesy though. And sure, if u want, i'll take suggestions for some songs from the 70's and early 90's too

god, where to start? i could be here all night.

check out the early albums of bon jovi. you'll be surprised at how, one time in the distant past, they we'rent actually soft balls of unlikable goo, but big balls of roguishly unlikable almost-punk hair. with some alarmingly intricate guitar work and BIG chorus lines

billy idol. come on. and van halen....... oh yes.
the cult.... the cure.... the clash.............. the three C's!
madness - an almost faultless band
police - not nearly as faultless but still fantastic if you concentrate on the big hitters
robert palmer, peter gabriel - interesting soloists, often sorely forgotten
whitesnake, status quo, dire straits and zz top for the cheese factor
QUEEN! (if you get into the cure and queen, then you really also have to give both Darkness albums a full listen through, and their B-sides)
abba... sort of
heaven 17, new order, and suede (just about)
madonna! (get your pink handbags out and abandon any machismo (or dignity, for the ladies) to the wind for a few minutes, just dont let your friends see)
aerosmith - they were far better in the 80s and early 90s; in fact the same effect applies as with bon jovi. at some point, they were rock, where did it all go horribly wrong (and red hot chili peppers too - they were funk, at one time, rather than endlessly recycling the same pop record)

the earlier recordings of Pulp. a fair amount of trash, to be sure, but the odd gem here and there.
the stone roses just about count, and have some excellent classics
fleetwood mac

hmmm, what else... just spoilt for choice really
*delves into My Music folder*

anything AC/DC, Sabbath or Zep that fits into your timescale is almost automatically worth your attention.
Guns and Roses, Metallica (master of puppets.... and the black album just about fits)
Donald Fagen - everyone should give the Nightfly at least one listen and decide if they like it or not.
Pet Shop Boys, Erasure (?)
R.E.M, Talking Heads, B52s, Proclaimers
Grandmaster Flash, The Furious Five, The Sugar Hill Gang, and various combinations of the members of such.
Run DMC, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest
They Might Be Giants (one of their better albums, Flood, released just in time for 1990... as noted in the intro track!)
Innumerate early techno groups

Michael Jackson did his best work in the 80s, too.

And..... we really can't leave Meat Loaf out. It would be utterly remiss of us. Bat out of Hell, one of the most essential albums and tunes ever, purposely blending classical operatic style with rock and actually making it work.

and what of all the one hit wonders - tiffany, starship, the firm, yello, whoever it was did St Elmos Fire, ohhh theres just too many of them, brain overload!
(wow, i could isolate down everything "good" i have from just jan 1st 1980 to dec 31st 1989 and still have a massive collection :D)
